About The MABE Program 

One - Year International Program (Full - Time) and
Two - Year International Program (Part - Time)


Starting from the academic year 2001, the MABE offers two alternative for applicants:

One - Year International Program (Full - Time) and
Two - Year International Program (Part - Time)
both have the same structure.

Admisstion Criteria

You must have bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. You are not required to have an undergraduate degree or any previous course work in economics. In general, we look for a cumulative GPA of above 2.70 and a GMAT above 490 or GRE 1400 and TOEFL of above 500.

Two years working experience is required for applicants who want to study in the two-years international program (part-time).

For the applicants who are unable to acquire those requirements, the program will provide written examination to screen the potential candidates into the program.
Admission Procedures 
          Graduate students of the MABE program are designated under the program of advance study and research of the Chulalongkorn University. A graduate student may concurrently hold a position as research assistant and teaching assistant.
        The program encourages applicants with sound academic background who aspire to learn.Students are not required to have an undergraduate degree or any previous course work in economics.To be admitted as a graduate student,an applicant must have received a bachelor 's degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standard of any field and major.Applicants are evaluated through the basis of their prior performance and professional promise.These are evidence from academic records, letter of evaluation /recommendation from individuals familiar with the applications's capabilities,and any other pertinent data furnished by the applicants.While high academic achievement,or other persuasive evidence of professional promise, is exeptional. Applicants must also have a good command of English and relevant working experience in the international context.

Intensive Course
       Students with no undergraduate preparation in economics will need to attend the intensive courses in area of prerequisites prior to the first semester. In addition,student are required to have successfully completed a college level course in calculus with a grade of B or better or a non-credit mathematics course offered in the intensive courses.The 150-hour intensive courses provide basics for student on the following subjects: Mathematics,Statistics,Microeconomics,Macroeconomics,and Accounting.

TOEFL,GRE,GMAT
       MABE program looks for individuals who demonstrate aptitute,interest,and ability to successfully complete a challenging program.
Towards the criteria in admitting students,the program uses scores from TOEFL,and GRE or GMAT in considering student's ability. In general,we look for students who did well on the standardized test such as TOEFL of at least 500,GRE of at least 1400,or GMAT of at least 490.For students who do not acquire these requirements, the program will provide written examinations to screen potential candidates into the program.

Application List

      All candidates need to meet the following requires:
1.Complete application form.
2.An"official" transcript from the college or university previously attended.
3.Scores of TOEFL(minimum of........) or IELTS(minimum of 5.0) and GMAT(minimum of 490) or GRE(minimum of 1400) required for all non -native speaking applicants.Your most recent scores will be used and the test date must be within five years for GMAT or GRE and within two years for TOEFLor IELTS of your application.
4.Current Resume
5.Two letters of recommendation form referees who are able to evaluate the applicant's performance.
6.Prior-full time work experience and extra-curriculum activities.
7.Three 1-inch recent photographs
       Foreign applicants who are unable to contact the MABE office in person should do the following :
1.Download application and recommendation forms here !,fill in where necessary and send all the required materials by registered mail to the MABE office by the deadline;
2.It is important that you send your application fee and expenses for those necessary documents of US$30 or 1,000 baht in the form of international cheque/cashier cheque/money order/postal money order payable to the MABE program,Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University;
3.The applicants should also attach registered mail expenses(for international mail) of US$4(Asia)/US$5(Europe)/US$6(America),or for domestic mail) the sum of the 10 baht for all the neccessary documents to be delivered back to you.

Course Structure
 

       Full - Time program
       The program is divided into 3 terms. All students are required to take 8 basic core courses in the first two terms while the last term is designed to thesis writing or additional elective courses in order to graduate within one year. This gives a total of 36 credits in the three terms. An additional term is designed to accommodate non-thesis students who could not pass all 12 required courses in the three terms.In order to accommodate foreign visiting scholars, each term of the program is divided into 4 months, with one course offered in each month.
      
        Part - Time program
        The program is divided into six terms and covers two years.The course structure is the same as that of the full-time program, but part-time students are required to take only two courses in each term.There are also two options for part-time students - thesis option and non-thesis option.
      
Thesis/Comprehensive Examination

        Students enrolled in MABE program could choose to do a thesis or a comprehensive exam on their third term for full-time and fouth and sixth term for part-time. For thesis writing, students need to find a certain topic of interest within the areas of Business and Managerial Economics where a professor in the field of interest would be assigned to be the advisor of the thesis.
          For students who choose to do comprehensive examination, the examination would be held during May after the ending of the 11th and 12th subject. Comprehensive examination can be taken only if students pass all the 12th subjects including the individual study course with a satisfactory grade.
        The examination is composed of a written examination and an oral examination. Students need to pass both examinations to be considered a graduate of the Master of Arts in Business and Managerial Economics. For those who do not pass the examination will be given a second chance for both written and oral examination. Inability to fulfill the second comprehensive examination would automatically result in the termination of the student status in this program. The comprehensive examination is given once each term.
      
Course Description
       The MABE curriculum consists of 15 courses: 8 core courses, 6 elective courses, and 1 individual study course. The study begins with the eight core courses, which are prerequisites for the electives. The list and description of each core course are, as follows;

  The theory of the consumer and producer;oligopoly;game theory ;general equilibrium;uncertainly and imperfect information.  
 
  2940604 Advanced Economic Theory II 3 credits  
  Determination of aggregate demand and supply; microeconomics; foundations of macroeconomics; types of macroeconomic models; and the theroies related to the major macro variables such as consumption,investment,inflation,unemployment,business cycles and monetary and fiscal policies.  
 
  2940605 Quantative Methods in Economic Analysis 3 credits  
  Basic data ;formulation and estimation of econometric models;forecasting and simulation techniques;computer applications in these areas.  
 
  2949651 Cost and Financial Analysis 3 credits  
  Financial system of firm;managing operating funds; assesmental of firm performance; projection of financial requirements; analysis of capital investment decisions;assesment of the cost of capital; analysis of financing choices of firm.

  Economic relationships between organizational production and marketing management; production theory and organizational practice in planing, administration and factory control to improve productive efficiency and quality control; theories and techniques of current marketing mnagement

  Various economic theories related to investment in human capital; education,training, health care ,migration,job information, and child quality, assuming heterogenelity of population; econometric method using the selection technique to correct ability or selectivity bias; macro effects of investments in human capital,particularly in various levels of education,on the urban Thai economy, the imbalances between such investments and apsorptive capacity of the urban formal labor market,the imbalance between the rural and urban sectors,migration ,unemployment,under-emplayment ,the evolution and expandsion of the urban informal labor market,and appropriate human resource development ,and planing.

  Analysis of the role of money and finance in economic development; theories and empirical studies of the effect of monetary policy on economic development; financial institution and money market in developing countries; the government's role in policy making and developing money and capital markets and system for economic development.  
 
  2945694 Research Method and Workshop in Business an Managerial Economics 3 credits  
  Research and methodologies in social sciences and their application to studies ans cases of economics of business and management; problem identification; data collection and analysis; hypothesis formation and testing; presentation of research results.

  Scope,structure and evolution of international business; theories related to international business phenomena; problems in business activities among various economic,social and political environment; structure and factors affecting international business,e.g. monetary market,rules and regulations on trade agreements and international law ,role of the government and international organizations; the control of multinational corporation ;economic analysis of the multinational corporation.  
 
  2949657 Project Evaluation and Project Feasibility Analysis 3 credits  
  Concepts,process and methodology in feasibility analysis of private investment project, especially the analysis of marketing ,technical, financial,economic and environmental feasiblities; preparation of the feasibility study , project proposal and report with emphasis on practices and case studies of practical public and private projects.  
 
  2949658 Economics of Risk Management 3 credits  
  Introduction of risk and risk management; including business and family related risk management; as well as the study of risk management insurance, and public policy.  
 
  2942614 Internatiional Financial and Investment Theory 3 credits  
  The development and theory on the international financial and investment system; investment decisions; theory of investment choice; theory of efficient capital market; capital structure and cost of capital; exchange rate system and parity conditions; application to the issues of leasing, merger and acquisitions and corporate finance.

  In-depth atudy of any topic in business and managerial economics; topics can be changed and to be announced each year.
